Cover images in Google Docs are getting upgrades, including more image sources, an expanded stock library, and placeholder images. This feature is rolling out now.

You can now add visually appealing cover images to your documents more easily by using images from the web, Google Drive, Google Photos, or by URL, as well as an expanded selection of stock images. Placeholder images will also appear upon insertion for easier setup.

How to Add a Cover Image in Google Docs
Step 1: Enable Pageless Mode
Cover images are only available in Pageless mode, which removes traditional margins and allows images to span the full width of the document.
Open your Google Doc.
Click File > Page setup > Pageless and click OK.
Alternatively, go to Format > Switch to Pageless format.
Step 2: Insert a Cover Image
Once Pageless mode is enabled, follow these steps:
Click the Cover image chip at the top of your document.
A placeholder image will appear. Click it to open the image selection menu.
Choose one of the following options to add an image:
Choose from stock images (Google’s built-in gallery).
Upload from your computer or search the web (directly within Google Docs).

Step 3: Customize Your Cover Image
Resize or reposition: Drag the image handles to adjust its size and placement.
Change the image: Click the cover image chip again and select a new image.
